Theodore Gericault (1791-1824)

A pioneer of the romantic movement in painting, who inspired legions of French painters after him. Here is his self-portrait.

And here is his most famous painting, the monumental The Raft of the Medusa (1818-19) (click on the photo to enlarge):

  1. I love the colours in that preliminary sketch of 'the raft' - but it is of course NOT the actual Gericault masterpiece, which is a far gloomier affair. I had not seen the sketch until I sttumbled upon this page.
    It seems Both are on display in the Louvre, though I missed the sketch in my brief visit.
