Happy Birthday Michael Faraday (1791-1867)

An important English physicist and chemist, who laid the foundation for the electromagnetic field concept in physics by discovering (among other things) electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism, and the laws of electrolysis. As a chemist, Faraday discovered benzene and invented a precursor to the Bunsen burner. He is still revered today for the quality of his experimental methods, even though he had little formal training and new little mathematics.

  1. Hi Dr. Cole,

I've been doing research on the bicycle, and it has been mentioned that Faraday was a cyclist himself, but I cannot seem to find any more information on that. Would you know any more about Faraday's cycling?

  2. I don't know anything about Faraday himself riding bicycles. Indeed, the modern bicycle design dates only from mid-19th century, just around the time of Farday's death. Earlier versions, such as the velocipide existed during his life, but I've never seen anything suggesting that he ever rode one, let alone avidly. There is a company called Faraday bicycles, which is named after him apparently because they produce bikes that run on electric motors and batteries. Dan
