Niall Ferguson on the Potential Fall of the American Empire

Niall Ferguson, the always engaging historian of economics (as opposed to economic historian), has a typically provocative piece in yesterday's LA Times, suggesting something like a "punctuated equilibrium" model for the collapse of empires.

BTW, if you haven't read Ferguson's two-volume history of the House of Rothschild, you must. His other books are worth reading as well.
