Funny, but Newsworthy?

The Times reports (here) that a group weigh-in at a Weight Watchers meeting in Sweden was disrupted when the floor began to collapse. What could possibly make this story newsworthy, apart from some editor's cynical expectation that readers take an almost juvenile pleasure in others' misfortunes (schadenfreude). Sadly, that expectation seems to be justified. The story is the second most read article at timesonline.co.uk today. And, after all, I am blogging about it.
